The frozen finale of Chapter 5 in Demo 5. A massive ice creature whose freeze mechanics and ice terrain make the arena itself a hazard. One of the most challenging area-control fights in Block Tales.

Frostmaw is mechanically different from every other boss in Block Tales. It is the first enemy in the game to have a Shield stat, meaning a portion of incoming damage is absorbed before HP is touched. It is also the first boss where the win condition is not pure damage โ€” you must keep the NPC ally Cassie alive. If Cassie dies, you automatically lose the fight, even if Frostmaw is at 1 HP. This makes the fight a unique balance of damage and sustain, not a simple burn race.

Unique Win Condition: Keep Cassie Alive

Unlike every previous Block Tales boss, Frostmaw cannot be killed by raw damage alone. The fight has an NPC ally named Cassiewho fights alongside you. If Cassie's HP reaches 0, you lose โ€” even if Frostmaw is below 1% HP. The proven community strategy is:

  • 1.Apply Charge Defense to Cassie (cuts incoming damage by ~50%)
  • 2.Keep Deep Focus active on Cassie (boosts her ATK and lifesteal)
  • 3.Spam Ice Dagger โ€” it heals Cassie for 30 HP per cast via lifesteal
  • 4.Bring Feel Fine to clear Dizzy and Confused status effects
  • 5.One Reddit user's winning build was: 50 HP, 25 SP, 30 BP, support role

This is the same strategy that won a solo-support run on r/blocktales with the build "Charge defense and deep focus then have the defense constantly active on her while spamming focus for icedaggers since they heal her for 30 hp."

Lore & Story

Demo 5 Version

Frostmaw is the enforcer of the Korbloxian Empire and the right hand of Arg'il. It is the final guardian of The Seventh Sanctum in Chapter 5, and the only boss in Block Tales that has a visible command hierarchy in the combat log โ€” the player can see Frostmaw receiving literal orders from Arg'il mid-fight. This is the first and only boss in the game to have a named command-giver relationship shown to the player. Frostmaw is also the first enemy with a Shield stat, an attribute that scales with party size and absorbs a portion of incoming damage before HP is touched. Burn damage ticks bypass the shield โ€” this is why Fire cards are the primary counter.

๐ŸŽตThe โ€œTime Brokeโ€ Theme

Frostmaw's boss theme is widely known in the community by the nickname โ€œTime Brokeโ€ because of its time-freeze aesthetic. The track was composed by wheel_able and has amassed 475,000+ YouTube views on the official upload, making it one of the most-streamed boss themes in the game. Multiple piano covers, slowed/reverb remixes, and TikTok sound-tracks have been built on top of it. The community consistently ranks it alongside Bubonic Plant (3.2M views) and Hatred as the iconic Demo 5 boss themes.

โ„๏ธ Weaknesses

  • โˆ’ Fire attacks (2x damage)
  • โˆ’ Melee combo builds
  • โˆ’ Antidote for freeze stacks

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Resistances

  • โœ• Ice attacks
  • โœ• Freeze effects (immune)

Frostmaw is fully immune to Ice and Freeze โ€” it's the only Chapter 5 boss that is โ€œimmune to its own element.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Recommended Cards

Fire cards deal 2x damage to Frostmaw. Run at least 2 Fire cards in your main deck. The remaining slots should be a heal (Cure / Heal Plus) and an AoE for any enemy adds in The Pit rematch.

โ„๏ธ Solo Strategy

Keep Antidote ready โ€” freeze stacks reduce your action speed and can lock you out of cards. Fire cards deal double damage. Phase 2 brings ice terrain that deals 5 damage per turn standing on it. Reposition frequently. His Ice Breath is a ranged attack that can't be parried โ€” use Barrier to block it.

Phase 1 (100% to 50% HP):Open with Fireball and Flame Sword to break Frostmaw's Shield quickly. Burn DoT ticks bypass the shield and apply directly to HP. Save Barrier for Ice Breath โ€” it's the only move that can one-shot you at low HP. Keep Antidote ready to cleanse 1-stack freezes before they stack to 3 (frozen = lose your turn).

Phase 2 (below 50% HP โ€” Ice Terrain active): Reposition every turn. Standing on an ice tile costs you 5 HP per turn. In duo play with Arg'il, kill Arg'il first so the arena is safer. With Cassie as your NPC ally, your entire Phase 2 priority shifts to defense and sustain โ€” fire off Fireball, then reapply Charge Defense + Deep Focus on Cassie. Do not try to burst Frostmaw down while Cassie is at risk. The fight rewards patience over greed.

โš”๏ธ Duo Boss: Arg'il + Frostmaw

In the canonical Chapter 5 path, Frostmaw is fought alongside Arg'il as a duo encounter in The Seventh Sanctum. The community consensus is to kill Arg'il first โ€” his Stone Wall terrain denial makes fighting Frostmaw exponentially harder because:

  • โ€ขStone Walls spawn in the same tiles as Ice Terrain โ€” you have nowhere safe to stand
  • โ€ขArg'il's Quake AoE (16 damage) hits through Ice Terrain
  • โ€ขKilling Arg'il first removes the only AoE in the fight, making the Cassie survival condition manageable
Rewards: Frost Armor set, 4000 XP
