How to Beat Cruel King in Block Tales
The Chapter 1 final boss of Blackrock Castle. The first real parry check, the first ice-weakness tutorial, and the gatekeeper to Shedletsky's Secret Arena.
The first major boss of Block Tales. A tyrannical king who rules the starting kingdom with sword attacks and a devastating charge move. Players encounter him at the end of Chapter 1.
The Royal Charge Parry โ The Single Most-Whiffed Mechanic in Chapter 1
Royal Charge is a 14-damage lunge with a 2-telegraph animation. The Cruel King raises his scepter overhead (telegraph #1) and then lunges forward in a straight line (telegraph #2). The parry window is ONLY on the lunge frame โ pressing parry on the scepter raise will whiff and you take the full 14 damage. Reddit r/blocktales "1f5mii6 โ any tips on cruel king? (please help me)" is one of the most-upvoted beginner-help threads in the subreddit, and the universal answer is "stop parrying the scepter raise, parry the lunge".
A successful parry grants a free counter-attack. This is the highest-damage opening in the entire fight โ a parried Royal Charge + Ice Dagger counter-combo deals 22 damage (14 counter + 8 ice follow-up) and stuns the Cruel King for one full turn. Two successful parries clear the second half of the fight solo, which is why the "all-in offense no heals" budget build works at all.
The May 9 2026 Demo 5 Story Rewrite removed Cruel King's 1-defense passive (Fandom wiki confirmation: "Cruel King's Defense removed"). This is a small buff to player damage output and a small nerf to defensive stall strategies. The Reddit r/blocktales community's reading of the patch is that the fight is intended to be cleared by parry timing, not by out-DPS-ing the Crown Toss rotation โ bring Snowball + Ice Dagger for the weakness, not raw Power Stab spam.
Weaknesses
- โ Ice attacks (2x damage)
- โ Parry timing on charge attacks
- โ Defense piercing cards
Resistances
- โ Fire attacks
- โ Stun effects
Recommended Cards
Reddit r/blocktales budget pick: drop Rapid Jab and bring a second Snowball. The 2x ice weakness is multiplicative โ two Snowballs in one turn (3 BP + 3 BP = 6 BP) deals more total damage than a single Power Stab (5 BP), AND it sets up the slow debuff so Royal Charge becomes more readable. The slow is the highest-value debuff in the fight โ a slowed Cruel King skips every other Sword Slash cycle.
Attack Patterns
| Attack | Damage | Type | Parryable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword Slash | 8 | Physical | โ |
| Royal Charge | 14 | Physical | โ |
| Crown Toss | 6 | Ranged | โ |
Solo Strategy
Focus on parrying his Royal Charge โ it's his highest damage move and parrying it gives a free counter. Use Ice cards to exploit his weakness. Bring at least 15 BP for a comfortable fight. Phase 2 (below 50% HP) adds a Crown Toss ranged attack โ keep your defense up.
Phase-by-Phase Breakdown
Front Half โ Sword Slash + Royal Charge Rhythm (150 โ 75 HP)
The Cruel King opens with a Sword Slash / Royal Charge rotation. Sword Slash is a parryable 8-damage swing; Royal Charge is the 14-damage parryable lunge that gates the entire fight. Lead with Snowball on turn 1 to apply the slow debuff โ a slowed Cruel King skips every other Sword Slash cycle, which means fewer Crown Toss follow-ups in the back half. Parry the FIRST Royal Charge to learn the timing, then commit to parrying every Charge from there. The Counter from a parried Charge + Ice Dagger follow-up is your highest damage window.
Back Half โ Crown Toss Spam (75 โ 0 HP)
Below 75% HP, the Cruel King shifts to a Crown Toss-heavy rotation (6 damage, unparryable ranged). This is where unprepared players die โ the Crown Toss is fast and pierces Shield Bash's block window. The Reddit r/blocktales "1f5mii6" beginner wall is this back half. The fix: keep Shield Bash on cooldown (4 BP to negate one full Crown Toss), and save your heal card for the SECOND Crown Toss cycle. Push him below 30% HP in 2 turns and the Crown Toss cadence breaks โ he returns to a Sword Slash / Royal Charge rotation, which is the rhythm you can parry.
The Cruel King Hands Off โ Unlocking Shedletsky's Secret Arena
Defeating the Cruel King unlocks THREE downstream chains. First, Chapter 2 opens (Bizville Train / Griefer). Second, the Castle Armory in the upper level of Blackrock Castle becomes a vendor hub. Third โ and this is the one most players miss โ a hidden passage opens behind the throne room, gated by the Shrinking Card from the Bizville Library. That passage leads to Shedletsky's Secret Arena, where the optional Shedletsky rematch begins the Venomshank sword questline.
Quest chain order: Cruel King (Blackrock Castle) โ Shedletsky (Secret Arena) โ Venomshank retrieval (Lost Temple) โ Griefer (Chapter 2) โ Bubonic Plant (Griefer transformation). The Cruel King is the upstream gate for the entire Shedletsky โ Venomshank โ Griefer โ Bubonic Plant progression line, and clearing the full chain unlocks the Alternate Reality badge.
