The Kitchen Wizard — also known as Ghost Chef — is a recurring character in Block Tales who appears in both Chapter 1 (as a Blackrock Castle chef minor NPC) and Chapter 3 (as a cooking quest boss). In Chapter 1, he is killed by Tutorial Terry. In Chapter 3, he is resurrected as Ghost Chef and can be found in The Manor after being saved by Telamon. He tasks the player with gathering Spider Cider, Dust, and a Raw Turkey for his special soup. Defeating him in combat unlocks permanent cooking buffs that boost HP/SP recovery for the rest of the run.

Cooking Quest Walkthrough — How to Unlock the Fight

Step 1 — Reach The Manor (Chapter 3): The Kitchen Wizard respawns as Ghost Chef in The Manor, accessible during the Chapter 3 storyline. Talk to Telamon first to trigger the "Kitchen Wizard saved" cutscene.

Step 2 — Gather Spider Cider: The first ingredient. Spider Cider is found in the Spooky Forest area of Chapter 3. Look for spider web clusters hanging from trees — interact to harvest.

Step 3 — Gather Dust: Found in the Abandoned Attic of The Manor itself. Dust is a "hidden" ingredient — most players miss it. Look on top of bookshelves and inside wardrobes.

Step 4 — Gather Raw Turkey: Raw Turkey is found in the Turitopulis market (talk to the merchant near the fountain). It costs 50 Tix. Alternatively, you can hunt wild turkeys in the surrounding fields.

Step 5 — Deliver & Fight: Return all three ingredients to the Kitchen Wizard. He begins cooking and then turns hostile — the boss fight starts. Defeat him to unlock the Soup Buff and Spice Buff.

Weaknesses

  • Fire attacks (Fireball) — Ghost Chef is vulnerable to fire on his ghostly form
  • Ice attacks to slow his teleport between kitchen stations
  • Shield during Cooking Storm AoE
  • Multi-hit combos to interrupt his soup-stirring buff ritual

Resistances

  • Stun effects (already ethereal, hard to lock down)
  • Slow debuffs (he teleports through them)
  • Status effects from cards that target 'living' enemies

Solo Strategy

The Kitchen Wizard fight is a Chapter 3 utility boss that rewards players for engaging with the cooking quest. His signature move is Cooking Storm — a 1-turn AoE cast that deals 10 damage and applies Burn for 2 turns. Parry the cast or use Shield to negate. His other attacks are Soup Toss (ranged 6 damage, parryable) and Spectral Flip (teleports and deals 8 damage on arrival). At 25% HP, he enters Ghost Form — becomes ethereal for 2 turns, immune to physical damage. Use Fireball or Inferno during Ghost Form for 2x damage. Recommended BP 18+. The cooking buffs he grants (Soup Buff: +20 max HP, Spice Buff: +10% BP regen) are permanent for the run and stack with other buffs. Players who skip this fight lose out on one of the most efficient stat boosts in Chapter 3.

Rewards: Soup Buff (+20 max HP, permanent for run), Spice Buff (+10% BP regen, permanent for run), access to all Kitchen Wizard recipes (HP recovery items, SP recovery items, status cleanse), 1200 XP

Lore & Backstory

The Kitchen Wizard has one of the most interesting character arcs in Block Tales. In Chapter 1, he is a living chef in Blackrock Castle who accidentally triggers a kitchen equipment destruction cutscene when given the 'wrong' liquid by the player. By Chapter 3, Tutorial Terry has killed him off-screen — but the developers cleverly used this to introduce Ghost Chef, a resurrected version of the same character who serves as a mid-chapter quest boss. The 'wrong liquid' callback is a community favorite moment, and the cooking buffs he grants remain one of the most underused but powerful utility bonuses in the game. The 11K+ Pinterest searches for 'Kitchen Wizard Block Tales' confirm his status as a community-favorite NPC.

Why the Buffs Make This Fight Worth Doing

The Soup Buff (+20 max HP) and Spice Buff (+10% BP regen) granted by defeating the Kitchen Wizard are some of the most efficient stat boosts in Chapter 3. Compared to a +10 HP charm purchased at the Tix merchant, the Soup Buff is permanent for the run and stacks with all other HP bonuses. The Spice Buff alone lets you play more aggressively — you can fire off expensive cards like Inferno more often without running dry.

The cooking recipes unlocked after the fight are also major value. HP recovery items (Kitchen Wizard's Soup) restore 50 HP for 30 Tix — making them an infinite-heal option in late Chapter 3 and early Chapter 4. SP recovery items (Spice Blend) restore 25 SP. Status cleanse (Purified Stock) removes any debuff. These recipes turn a difficult run into a smooth one for the rest of the playthrough.
